RES 712 - Qualitative and Exploratory Research Methods


This course explores non-statistical forecasting and other qualitative research methods. Qualitative research methodologies have become more prevalent in research as a viable and valid form of inquiry, especially as they pertain to human behavior in organizations. Qualitative research techniques examined include ethno methodology; grounded theory; and phenomenological research. Nonparametric statistical analysis will also be examined.

Outcomes
  • Demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of the qualitative research approach, including its most common traditions, frameworks, methodologies, methods, and techniques associated with the major social science and business disciplines.
  • Interpret the underlying philosophies, concepts, and critical attributes associated with the qualitative research approach, along with its key traditions, methods, and designs identified within the qualitative BOK and literature.
  • Compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages associated with each of the major qualitative research traditions.
  • Obtain the ability to apply the most appropriate qualitative research traditions, methods, and designs to a specific research problem or study (theoretical or applied) demonstrating relevance based on research objectives and context.
  • Debate with colleagues and peers on the content and criteria of the qualitative research approach, along with its key traditions, methods, and designs in order to consult with other scholars and researchers concerning their application for a particular problem under study.
